A purchase request arrives, a customer document is uploaded, or a compliance exception needs review. Amazon EventBridge and AWS Step Functions can coordinate those activities around foundation-model calls, with application services responsible for authentication, authorization and state. AWS Certified Generative AI Developer – Professional (AIP-C01) includes enterprise integration because reliability depends on the systems surrounding the model.

Consider a regional insurer that receives a new claims attachment. The required outcome is a draft summary with supporting evidence, a risk classification and an optional human approval for further action. The file may be unreadable, the model may be throttled and a reviewer may respond the next business day. Trying to perform this entire process in one synchronous HTTP request creates fragile timeout and replay behavior.

Choose an event contract before choosing a workflow service

Define a stable event type, schema version, producer, tenant or account scope, correlation ID, document reference and occurrence time. The event should identify data rather than embed sensitive documents unnecessarily. Validate source identity and authorization before accepting the event into the workflow. Avoid an event type such as
run-any-model-command
that lets a producer bypass domain permissions by passing free-form instructions.

Use an idempotency key derived from an authoritative business event ID, not from a model-generated summary. Events can be delivered more than once, and downstream systems may be temporarily unavailable. Track the work item in a durable store so a duplicate event does not create two claims or trigger two expensive inference jobs. Define the meaning of completion separately from “a model responded.”

Apply EventBridge for decoupled routing

Amazon EventBridge can route matched business events to configured targets and separate the intake system from AI processing. A routing rule might send approved document-upload events to a workflow while unrelated events go to different services. Keep filtering by explicit event attributes and avoid using an LLM to decide whether a core access-control rule is satisfied. Invalid or misrouted messages need an operational handling path rather than silent discard.

For event-driven telemetry, know the difference between delivery and business success. An event successfully delivered to a target can still lead to a failed model request or a rejected approval. Emit separate status events for validation failure, extraction completed, review needed and result committed. The AWS documentation on Step Functions event delivery notes that standard-workflow events can be delivered on a best-effort basis and out of order; do not build ordering guarantees that the source does not provide.

Model long-running work with Step Functions states

Use an explicit state machine such as Validate upload → Extract content → Verify record → Invoke model → Validate evidence → Await review if required → Commit approved result → Notify. Each state has a specific input contract, timeout, retry policy and failure path. For sensitive workflows, carry identifiers and references instead of raw customer content across every state transition.

A failed extraction should branch to repair or manual intake, not to generation with fabricated context. If evidence validation fails, return a draft marked as incomplete. If review is pending, keep the business action uncommitted. A task’s success response only proves that task completed according to its contract; it does not prove a generated claim was factually correct. The AWS Step Functions service integration guidance describes how workflows may send events for downstream handling.

Decide between synchronous model calls and queued inference

Small interactive requests may work with a bounded synchronous Bedrock call. Large attachments or unpredictable request bursts benefit from durable processing, concurrency limits and an asynchronous result retrieval model. Keep the model request deadline shorter than the outer business workflow’s patience, and prevent the same customer task from multiplying attempts under load.

When Bedrock reports a transient capacity problem, back off within a defined budget and preserve the business state. When a model lacks a required format or IAM permission, retrying unchanged requests wastes time. Record the distinction. If the workflow can tolerate a delay, route the task to a review queue rather than sending it to an unapproved model or Region simply because the preferred option is unavailable.

Treat human approval as a separate authenticated transaction

A reviewer should see the draft decision, sources, detected uncertainty and relevant policy version. Their approval must bind to a particular artifact and business object. If either changes before completion, invalidate or recheck the prior approval. Do not accept “human approved” merely because the language model included that phrase in its response.

Store reviewer identity, decision time and action scope in the domain system. Put any committed write through the same business validations that would apply without AI: transaction cap, account ownership, concurrency control and audit retention. Keep the agent tool identity framework in mind when connecting the workflow to APIs with side effects.

Design compensating actions and recovery evidence

A process may commit a customer notice before a later accounting step fails. Step Functions can coordinate the intended recovery, but restoration of external state requires explicit domain compensation and may not always be possible. Document which actions can be safely repeated, which must be reconciled, and which require a human incident response. Preserve operation IDs at the system of record rather than reconstructing them from model conversation history.

Test the path where a state transition times out after a downstream API accepted the write. Replaying an action without verifying the committed state can create duplicates. Store durable receipts and implement reconciliation that checks the target system before another attempt. For similar resilience questions at the inference edge, see the Converse API retry analysis.

Observe business completion rather than workflow traffic

Emit metrics for events accepted, duplicates discarded, processing age, dead-letter backlog, extraction uncertainty, model timeouts, approval delay and final accepted outcome. Segment by workflow state and document type, not only by model token count. A large number of generated summaries may be bad news if none has supporting citations and reviewers reject most of them.

Test with missing attachments, stale contract revisions, an invalid caller, duplicate events, a denied reviewer, unavailable downstream APIs and an action that succeeds just before a timeout. The workflow is production-ready when it remains consistent under those conditions and operators can explain the final business state. The five-domain AIP-C01 architecture guide places this workflow alongside retrieval, security, evaluation and optimization. AIP-C01 integration questions reward the distinction between events, state transitions, model output and authorized action.

An enterprise generative-AI workflow often starts from an event, not from a user waiting for a chat response.
